I had the opportunity to meet with Montreal fashion designer Mélissa Nepton at the Hush Puppies boutique in Carrefour Laval on Saturday. Mélissa kindly showcased her fall/winter 2012 collection at the store while she met with customers and fans of her line. I was fortunate enough to spend some time talking with her about her career, future collection, and of course something a little more personal!
For two seasons now, Mélissa Nepton has been partnering with Hush Puppies Canada. Hush Puppies designs, particularly Auddie, Maize, Teya, and Felicity were seen on Mélissa's Runway during both Montreal Fashion Week and Toronto's World Mastercard Fashion Week for the last two seasons. I was so excited when I received an invite to the in store event; I just couldn't pass up the opportunity. Especially since I absolutely fell in love with the her spring/summer 2013 collection!
Mélissa is a native Montrealer who, for the last three years, has worked on creating a chic line of prêt-à-porter clothing geared towards the fashion-savvy business woman. From a young age, she was inspired by the fashion world and completed various degrees in fashion in both Montreal and Paris.
After completing her studies in fashion at Cégep Marie-Victorin and École Supérieure de Mode de Montréal, she headed to beautiful Paris and embarked on her journey at École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs. She finished her year with an impressive Masters in Arts and for the first time ever, presented her collection on the runway.
Mélissa spoke fondly of the six years she worked as a buyer for Marie-Claire, and spoke about her unforgettable experience on Quebec's version of Project Runway, in which she participated with her twin sister (and came in second place - awesome!). After having seen her commendable spring/summer 2013 collection, I was curious what Nepton had in store for fall/winter 2013!
"You can expect a lot of browns, yellows, terracotta, tan... In the past I've stuck to black and white. My upcoming collection will include warmer colours. It's going to have a bit of an 'équestre' flare", she told me in her charming French Canadian accent. "Expect a lot of contrast, too. Each and every piece will have a mix of textures and materials. Think silk and leather... It's going to be edgy."
Mélissa described her upcoming collection, which is to be released in stores in spring 2013, as a reflection of her "relaxed demeanour". After seeing the pastel colours on the runway, I had to ask what inspired her decision to use them. She calmly stated, "When you change, the designs change as well." Nepton is certainly changing... she's is expecting a baby girl in February! Pastel colours and breezy-beautiful materials are no doubt a latent result of the little bundle of joy she's carrying!
Throughout the event, I tried on some of her clothes, and I must say that the quality and charm of her pieces is apparent when you see them on the rack, but much more apparent when you've got them on!
Her collection is available online and at various boutiques throughout Canada. You can view the complete list of locations here.

Spending the afternoon visiting my old stomping grounds and chatting with Mélissa was definitely a great combo for a fabulous afternoon. Looking forward to seeing her next collection during MFW this winter!
